Rwanda Development Board announced Friday that the prestigious Kwita Izina- annual Gorilla naming ceremony will take place this month despite the devastating effects of Covid-19.

Since the first Gorilla Naming Ceremony in 2005, about two hundred eighty one (281) gorilla babies have been named. The ceremony is usually held at the foot of Volcanoes National park at Kinigi village, Musanza district in Nothern Rwanda.

In July, Rwanda received the world’s first ever global safety and hygiene stamp launched by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). Rwanda was placed in the same pack with Dubai and Indonesia as the latest recipients.

With Covid-19 pandemic spreading so fast in several countries, Rwanda has been intensively fighting it with impressive gains. The country has imposed several restrictions such as mandatory face-mask wearing while in public places, hand washing, suspension of public entertainment events and closure of bars.

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) which represents the global Travel & Tourism private sector, created the Safe Travels stamp to allow travellers to identify destinations and businesses around the world which have adopted the global standardised health and hygiene protocols.

Belise Kariza, Chief Tourism Officer at Rwanda Development Board said while accepting the WTTC Safe Travels stamp.

“Rwanda’s number one priority is the health and well-being of visitors to our beautiful country. As one of only three countries in the world with endangered mountain gorillas and numerous other primate species, we also have a special responsibility to protect these magnificent animals,” Kariza said recently.
