Hundreds of Bannyahe slum residents in a small corner of one of Kigali's elite suburbs were by Friday still camped on site as a means to register their complaints of unfair expropriation.

In 2017, about 800 residents were asked to evacuate from the slum for a real estate investor to construct facilities of public and community interest as required by land lease agreements between government and land holders.

The victims of this expropriation wished to be compensated by cash and not relocated to conjoined housing at an estate in Busanza, Nyarugunga sector,  Kicukiro district â€" Kigali. The new Busanza housing project comprises of over 1,000 units.

Yotamu Ntivuguruzwa says, 'It may be hard to start a new life. My wife visited the place and we agreed to shift even if the new house is small.'

However, the city of Kigali has appeared in different court sessions as it defends itself in dozens of cases appealing against unfair expropriation.
