You can make your weekend more exciting and fulfilling by taking a trip to Akagera National Park in Rwanda's Eastern Province.

Around this season of the year, the weather is excellent with intermittent patterns of rain and sunshine- this offers a chance to see herbivores grazing in large numbers without chasing after foliage.

Akagera National Park which spans an area of 1,122 km² is characterized by woodland, swamps, low mountains and savannah and borders with Tanzania.

The park's varied terrain shelters wildlife including zebras, giraffes, elephants, lions and hundreds of bird species, such as the rare shoebill stork. In the southern part of the park, vast Lake Ihema is home to hippos and crocodiles.

According to the park management, 'Since 2010 we have cut poaching to an all-time low, with the introduction of a helicopter, a canine unit and rhino trackers.' Recently some endangered animal species were being fitted with GPS to ensure proper tracking.

'Visitors can also encounter buffalo, elephant, antelope, zebra, giraffe, baboons, monkeys, an incredible 490 bird species, plus much more,' according to information on Visit Rwanda website.

While in this park you should not afford to miss a boat trip on Lake Ihema â€" it is also a highlight of any visit to Akagera, with its large pods of hippos, Nile crocodiles and abundant waterbirds on the island in the middle of the lake.

Sleeping within the park is possible, at various lodges, a bush camp in the north at select periods, or camping in specific sites.
