On March 14, President Paul Kagame took to his personal twitter handle and announced that Rwanda had registered its first Covid-19 case and asked the people not to panic.
Kagame immediately provided guidelines that would help Rwandans keep safe from the deadly virus that was spreading so fast mostly facilitated by air travelers.
'Washing hands frequently, avoiding handshakes, practicing social distancing of at least 1m away from people, among others. We urge everyone to follow the health guidelines,' Kagame guided.
On March 21, the Rwandan cabinet resolved that the entire country would shut down into a total lockdown -everything closed including the borders, shops, bars, churches, schools and unnecessary movements outside home were prohibited.
In response to this ugly pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO), European Commission and France in response to this pandemic in April, launched Covax- an international initiative to distribute Covid-19 vaccines to countries worldwide.
The initiative is designed so that richer countries agree to buy into potential vaccines and help finance access for poorer ones.
Covax plans to buy 2 billion doses of a vaccine by the end of 2021, although it remains unknown whether the successful vaccine will require one or two doses.
On Monday, President Paul Kagame said that his government was already working with European countries and Covax. He added that Rwanda would be among the first countries to receive a consignment of the vaccine that will be available under Covax arrangement.
'We will be amongst the first countries on the continent to receive this vaccine. In the first months of next year or till June if it delays, we will have gotten a vaccine that can save some most vulnerable lives even if it's not for everyone of us,' Kagame said while he addressed the Nation.
President Kagame said that because of how Rwandans have handled this pandemic as a country, 'it makes people say but these Rwandans who have conducted themselves this good, deserve to be amongst the first to receive the vaccine.'
