On Friday afternoon, July 3, the former Prosecutor General, Jean Bosco Mutangana, took oath as a senior advocate before the President of the Kigali High Court, Xavier Ndahayo.
Together with four other lawyers, Mutangana swore to uphold the highest professional values as he walked out of the room as a private advocate after 20 years in public service.
Mutangana will begin providing legal services in the courts of law, this time in defense of individuals as opposed to serving as a prosecutor.
“I am carrying all my experience from prosecution to practicing as a defense lawyer,” Mutangana said, adding that, “it is important for those who served in government to cross to private sector.”
According to Julien Kavaruganda, the current President of the BAR, the new members have come with a set of skills highly needed to contribute to the needs of the association.
Specifically, the BAR expects them to add value to ongoing efforts of creating a research center.
The center will require sophisticated input and, “we are glad to have them.”
There are 1250 members in addition to the four new members.
Meanwhile, the President of the High Court, shortly after their swearing, said that there is a specific focus on fight graft and he submitted a plea requesting them to play their role.
“We want to fight corruption. We are requesting you to play your role on top of other duties of helping courts to deliver justice,” Justice Ndahayo said.
Loyce K. Bamwine, former Company Secretary at BRD, who also took oath, enters the sector with legal firm, B&BS, and plans to bring in new blood.
“This gives me another opportunity to serve the public and my country to the best of my capabilities,” she said.
Other new members are Esperqnce Mugenzi is a State Attorney, require to become a member in order to appear before any court.
The other is Jean Bosco Nsengiyunva, a practicing bailiff who has been in the sector for a very long time.
