Global critics have raised concerns over the Emirati general's candidacy for the head of Interpol triggering strong criticism of the practice of torture in the United Arab Emirates.
In early October, Dubai's police chief Nasser Ahmed al-Raisi was nominated as the next president of the global crime control organisation Interpol.
Critics said this nomination was gifting the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with another golden opportunity to whitewash its reputation and cover up its human rights violations.
'The candidacy of Mr. Al Raisi for the head of the International Police is totally paradoxical, it is as if we could have considered appointing Saddam Hussein as head of an International Peace Committee! The comparison (admittedly anachronistic) comes from Matthew Hedges, a British researcher held in solitary confinement for seven long months in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2018.
He blames Ahmed Al Raisi, inspector general of the UAE's Ministry of the Interior since April 2015, for having supervised his torture and for having failed to mandate an internal investigation, thus engaging his responsibility through his inaction as head of the management of the security and police forces.
However, the Emirati general, a member of the Interpol executive committee â" he has been delegate for Asia since November 2018 â" is now running for the head of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).
