Mining Workers Disregard Anti Covid-19 Measures #rwanda #RwOT

Implementation of anti #Covid-19 measures across Rwanda seems highly observed in urban areas but there is complete disregard of such measures in remote parts of the country.

In rural settings, access to face masks is difficult and also less sensitisation about their use and adherence to anti covid-19 measures are still a big challenge.

For example, dozens of workers at mining sites, stone quarry sites and various construction sites in rural settings don’t wear facemasks. For them, #Covid-19 is a pandemic in the capital Kigali and border districts.

For example a mining site at Cyabingo and Busengo in Gakenke district, dozens of mine workers descend into mines and interact with each other as though #Covid-19 is a very distant or foreign pandemic that they only hear about on radio.

The Rwanda Mines, Petroleum & Gas Board (RMB) says it is now aware of this situation among workers in the mining sites; “we are making a follow up in connection with other institutions to ensure anti #Covid-19 measures are observed by all mining sites in the country.”

However, there is an existing undated four-page document on anti Covid-19 measures required to be observed by those in the mining sector as signed by Francis Gatare Chief Executive Officer of Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board.

For example mining sites are required to have hand washing facilities, all mine workers are required to wear face masks, staying at home in case the worker has nothing to do at the site and ensuring social distancing.
