A light plane from the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN) reportedly crashed in the village of Katale, in the territory of Rutshuru in the province of North Kivu on Wednesday.
The pilot died on the spot and 4 other people [farmers] who were on the ground at the site of the impact were injured, according to Joël Wengamulay, communications officer for the Virunga National Park.
'I confirm the information. There is 1 dead, the pilot and 4 injured people who were on the ground. It happened this morning. The wounded were evacuated to Goma for medical treatment, 'he told local media.
The plane took off from Katale airfield in the middle of Virunga Park and was due to do a reconnaissance mission, the conservation official said.
