Hosting about 100 militia groups, North Kivu Province may soon begin smiling in peace and not worrying of the daily rattling sound of smoking guns.

President Felix Tshisekedi is currently running the affairs of DRC from this part of the country where he has been for days. He has pledged the disbursement of resources to ensure the process of demobilization, disarmament and reintegration (DDR) of combatants in the province of North Kivu. He gave this assurance Tuesday (October 7) to elected national deputies of North Kivu during a meeting in Goma.

'The President has assured us that the means could be put in place to be able to take charge in particular of those who are going to hand over their weapons, to quarter them correctly and to transfer them to civilian life. We believe that this is very good news for our people and that it will help to restore peace, security and stability in North Kivu. 'Singoma Mwanza, chairman of the North Kivu deputies caucus, told reporters.

On Tuesday, Tshisekedi chaired several meetings in the North Kivu capital, including one with heads of the army, police and security service officials. He gave 'special directions' especially with regard to the rebellion of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in Beni, said Defense Minister Aimé Ngoy Mukena.

North Kivu has around 100 armed groups fighting for various reasons. Since Felix Tshisekedi came to power, several hundred fighters have traveled to this part of the country but subsequently returned to the bush for lack of a DDR plan from the authorities.

The latest wave of 500 Gilbert Bwira wing NDC-R fighters who have returned to Masisi territory, and stationed near the Rumangabo military camp, in Rutshuru territory, are also beginning to desert the site for lack of support. They were even accused of looting the property of the local population in a market in Rutshuru.
